then: WHO CHANGED THE CHANNEL? came along
Three of the four ladies were the same, and boy, did that make a difference! (The only reason these two anecdotes are connected.) We were golfing at some difficult (for me) and funky golf course, going about our play, when suddenly the 4th (new) player got snippy, rude, and even quick in her play, like leaving everyone else behind.
and that’s saying a lot
because Ellen and I are two of the fastest players around. I was a bit dumbfounded but said nothing, thought it was me imagining things. As we rode toward a fairway, Ellen, who was riding with me, said (because it was not a question): “Who changed the channel?” and stared at me. I remember it took me a second or two to get it. Then it was so funny! Still is.
that was exactly what it felt like
You know when someone changes the channel while you’re watching something and you go Hey! What the—?! That’s just what it was. It took Ellen a little while to figure out why. Not sure if it was the reason, but it made sense. A beautiful day lightly spoiled. But I learned, no, was reminded, excuse me, about the pettiness of people; and learned, for sure, a savvy question that I ask myself now and then (more times than I care to admit):
