not so great a
summer for the garden. at least not in our backyard: too much rain, trees too big — so we have less sun.
not pretty
To boot, I planted flowers in a raised bed, and my husband scattered green bean seeds that are taking over. I scattered seeds that I thought were too old in different spots, and they all germinated and grew! This means it doesn’t look good for tomatoes and most herbs. For Mother’s Day, my sister sent me —
at my bequest and to her chagrin 😝
PR calabaza (pumpkin) seeds, amongst others, and not knowing how quickly they germinate or that they would all germinate, I sowed them on June 21st (wrote it on the kitchen blackboard) between the garlic (that should have been ready to harvest by mid-July), but it has taken over.
may have a lot less garlic
than anticipated. Beetles are chewing up the basil, worms attacking Brussels sprouts. Bunnies are still feeding on tender shoots, so some planted flowers and sown seeds have zero chance. I could go on. First-world problems, I know. Not complaining, just splainin’ why I have not posted about H+G since May 25th, when the gorgeous peonies were out en masse.
plus (excuse # 3,456,788)
my camera isn’t working, and close-ups look better with a good camera, regardless of what anyone says.
In June, we had a landscaper dig up the hill in front of the house (it was all weeds because we had them take out old and ragged low bushes and … and. Will leave it at that. It’s in the past. Now we have a very neat, mulched, filled-with-grasses hill and seven or eight small pine trees on top. My husband calls them sentinels and the spiky grasses ground forces. Funny.
there are some older grasses too,
a hydrangea that is a bit slow — has been there a few years without blooms, but at least it is healthy, and now we can see it, a new little red maple, and some crazy plants. I bought a seven-pack of funky-looking plants years + years ago (probably mentioned them somewhere already), and they are like weeds. I’ve moved a couple here and there, and they take over. Have thrown out more than kept and still have them everywhere. But they are bea-u-ti-ful!!! Look like mini palm trees.
anywho, checking the newbies
on the hill yesterday, I thought: hmm, there is no nice demarcation between the mulch and the front yard grass on top of the hill … could we have a raised bed here? Narrow and long so that the flowers impinging on the veg beds out back could go there next year. 🤓 Plenty of sun, and sprinklers right there too.
could i sell it to my husband?
He thought it was a splendid idea — my word. I’m like 🤯 thinking about it already. It will be mainly for dahlias, but I know, I mean, right?, that it will be for more … if there’s room: lavender (too big/wide), sunflowers, zinnias on the ends, something in the middle to break up the scene, potted elephant ears milling around? A fox tail peeking through?
love it already
